Ham Soup

So, I made soup. Specifically ham soup.
A couple of weeks before Christmas, this soup came through my timeline.
I saved it knowing for Christmas we would have 2 hams (one smoked and one not) and with all that ham, I would be looking for some yummy ways to use it. And this soup looked yummy !
One day we just had ham sandwiches. Another.. Ham and cheese omelets.

(Took this before the cheese melted but they were delish )

But, I literally couldn't wait to make this soup.
Rinsed and soaked the beans the night before.
The next morning  Abs woke up to me in the kitchen and asked to help.  We set it up and let it cook for HOURS.
My husband came in raving about the smell and he himself couldn't wait to eat it.
The last 30 min, as the directions stated,   I added the lemon and tomatoes.
I followed the recipe exactly. And, I'm not usually that way. In fact Jimmy teased me. "Are you actually following a recipe? "
I explained that it looked so good that I wanted to be sure it was right!
After an entire day of waiting and smelling it...
I scooped myself a big bowl and .... disappointment. The flavor was amazing but, the beans were still hard! I let it cook longer.. Still hard. I boiled them.. Still hard.
I finally turned to Google. Seems there have been lots of hits on this.  I'm not exactly sure of the cause of my hard beans but, by process of elimination I'm going with older beans (on the shelf awhile). We recently moved to a smaller town .  I used the small town grocery store to shop the day before and , if I were a betting kinda gal, I'd say they've been there a minute.
As I said the flavor was still there. The three little girls raved. Jimmy loves my cooking and he loved it too. He had two bowls!
As for me , I ate a bowl that night and had the last of it today for lunch.

All in all I recommend this soup.  I will make it again. I'll just be sure to go to a bigger grocery store for my beans.
We have the bone from the smoked ham and my husband has requested split pea with that one .
So... guess what is for dinner Sunday?
