Shepard's pie

(This is not mine, it is the closest I have seen to mine. Photo credit here)

I always giggle when I make Shepard's Pie.

A long time ago... when I had only been married about 5 years. I "made up" a meal.
I had some potatoes that needed to be eaten and some burger pulled out.
I didn't meal plan at all at the time and so I was willy nilly and always just making what struck my fancy on that day.
I got it in my head to ground the burger then I added onions and corn. After that I thought "Oh, I'll bet that tomato sauce would be yummy too"
Then, add some potatoes on top with cheese.. This was pretty much meatloaf with mashed potatoes and corn all in one dish!
WOW. I then threw it in the oven to bake for a little while and when I ate it I ate it pretty pleased with myself.
I mean, here I made a delicious one pot meal and I had made it up ALL BY MYSELF.

I couldn't keep this a secret. I HAD to call my mom and tell her of my wonderful invention because, she was sure to want to make it.. how could she not?

So, I called her. I told her all about what I had done and she says... bursting my bubble.. "You made Shepard's Pie"
What? How could that be? I didn't even know what that was. I haven't ever had that, at least I didn't remember if I had.
She assured me that I hadn't made it up and it was in fact Shepard's Pie.
So, I of coarse Googled it... sure enough, I was NOT the genius I had thought I was. BUMMER.. lol
But, invented by me or not it sure is delish and this week while I was putting my menu together I thought that Shepard's Pie would make a great meal for the cool fall weather we have been having! Writing it down made me think of that day... and the first time I had ever made it. :)
