Our "School room"

When we moved into our house we had a "semi finished basement" which quickly turned into a junk pit.
A straight up episode from the show "Hoarders"

Over the past few years we have made several attempts to "finish" it... I say finish that way because we never had or have any intentions of putting new carpet down or new walls as, in the city we live in is known for flooding basements. It is a serious problem with tree roots and underground piping.

Our basement has flooded a time or two tho only slightly so we are opting out of putting a lot of money into it.

We painted the walls a khaki color that we got of the "oopsie" rack at Home Depot. That was as far as we had got all these years.

This year... we kinda put a little pep in our step and made it happen.
I was doing school on our school table in our living room since we are not blessed with an eat in kitchen or a dining room.
Before doing it in the living room we did it at our table. It was easier then as I only had one, then two kids in school. This year I have three and a 3 year old that I keep entertained.
The bigger table was needed but,  I hadn't had a place to put it.
The chaos of it all in my living room lit my fire to get the basement at least usable.

Here it is... usable.. it is a work in progress. I still have SO much I want to do but, it is low priority at this point.

The carpet is a piece from some carpet we bought for our previous house and never laid.
My husband put some in the school room and the rest in the play room (pics for that later)

The shelving (which doesn't have any books yet there are so many to bring down, I just
haven't yet) is from a video store in my area that went out of business.
They had these out front with a FREE sign and I thought they would be perfect.
I love them. I haven't decided if I will eventually paint them or not. For now, they are
a great way to store books (when I get them down there) and they are a great room
divider.

When we moved in this was already built on a wall
For years we just shoved junk inside but, it now houses all of our school supplies.
Also,  there is a drawer for each kid and their current work and workbooks.
It helps with things coming up missing especially pencils

(This is the next thing to get a face lift.
It is in much need of some fun bright color. I just
haven't decided the color or decided to take on the responsibility at the moment )

And here is our tree. I painted this happy little tree (as Bob Ross would say) a couple
of years ago. I thought it was so fun.
I think it brightens up our room and since we are in the basement, we could DEFIANTLY use it.

and here is a picture of Anna during her oral spelling test toady :)

Hope you enjoyed the tour.
As we do more and change things up I will post...

Kristy, while looking at your fabulous school room - I had a thought of perhaps doing chalkboard paint on one wall. You may find it handy plus little one might enjoy doing artwork while the others study.
You are doing a great job and I give you tons of credit!!! love, Rosie

Rosie..
THANKS SO MUCH for the comment.
I have thought of chalkboard paint..
However, the walls of our basement are cement and they are not smooth. So I am not sure how that would work out.

I have been looking out for one tho (a big one that they use at school would be awesome) to put down there at least in the play room.

I love it! I think it is seriously amazing. The tree is awesome. I would want to do school down there if I were your kids.

Good for you with your school room. Sometimes I wonder how we ever got along without ours!

The room looks great! I love the shelves and the tree. That one paneled wall has a lot of potential.

What about making your own chalkboard to hang out of Plywood or that thin board along with some trim board and painting with chalkboard paint? You could even do magnetic paint for part or all (combo). I like the carpet, too.
