I have been busy and tired and just hadn't felt like it.
But, I do really enjoy doing it .. it helps to look back and stay motivated and so, here is an update!
First, Gabe got an ant farm for Christmas and we waited
When they finally did... we added them to the farm.
And we waited.. again VERY PATIENTLY eagerly for them to start making tunnels..
This little guy was the only one to enter the tunnels (we had to start a couple per directions) for a looong time.
And then.. they all started working....
These are all the little pieces they had brought up from the tunnels. It is so neat to see them pinch it and carry it up, drop it off and go back for more! It is amazing how hard they work and no wonder the Lord mentions them in the Bible...
Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise:
Here is the ant farm as of today.. they have been busy little guys (and gals)
All that on top was stuff from the tunnels they have brought up. Mixed in are random ant parts from ants that haven't made it and they get thrown into the junk pile by those who have.
It has been a great time watching these guys.. With every new tunnel or new direction there has been much cheer.
I think when these ants expire we will be buying more.
Today we started our Michigan unit study.
We live in Michigan and this week is Michigans Birthday.
We are proud of our state so today we are learning facts about Michigan and we made these...
I did not take pictures of the entire process because of personal info being used but, you get the point. The older kids knew all of these but, it didn't hurt for them to write them out to help memorize how to spell things.
I am really looking forward to the next two weeks. We even have fun trip planned to the state capital !!!

I understand why you're tired! That looks like a lot of work, but so fun for the kids. :) I've heard Michigan is BEAUTIFUL, especially up near Traverse City. I'd love to visit there someday. (And meet you!)
Questions: Do you have to feed the ants? Why is that stuff green, I thought they dug in dirt? Are you worried about them escaping? Thanks. :)
Valerie.. YOU SHOULD come to visit :D it would be great and Michigan really is beautiful... coarse I am biased :P
I was worried about them escaping at first because one DID escape while we were putting them in and my daughter was stung on the neck. But, the fear is gone now. I did use some tape at first to keep the lid on but it is gone now. The lid is pretty tight.
I am unsure why the gel is green unless it is so it will glow more with the light provided by the ant farm.
We do not have to feed them. The gel gives them all the water and food that they need. They are also eating each other as they pass so, lots of protein there lol...
You are a really awesome homeschooling mom.
The ant farm looks really cool. Maybe once life settles down here we will get some of those. For now, I am not even attempting school. Maybe in February.
The ant farm is cool. Easy to do and maintain. They run around 20 bucks and you get a free coupon for ants but have to pay shipping. We found out tho that the place with the coupon only ships ants certain times of the year so we found a place that did ship them. They had FREE shipping and so the cost was the same as the "Free" ants. Took longer then the 10 days but we were happy all in all.
They have been a LOT of fun.
Next we will do a butterfly kit (tho in spring)
Looks like a great time at "school". I have never seen an ant farm like that, I want one! Anyhow, I enjoyed sharing in some of you school happenings. Looks fun.
Thanks Tori
I hadn't either but I really like it in the gel like that. The boys like to turn it on with the lights off and watch them. I don't blame them.
