Cold Science and Day 7 photo challenge

So, today is a COLD day in Michigan.
I have heard that in some areas the wind chill feels like -37 degrees or colder.
We are staying in for the most part!
I did help a neighbor with starting his car (he needed a jump) and we did the whole "throw the boiling water into the freezing cold air" experiment.
We also tried the "blowing bubbles into the freezing cold air" thing.
The Bubbles didn't work for us. We had no frozen bubbles but, the hot water... that was pretty cool to see!!! ***********disclaimer, if you try this ... DO IT AT YOUR OWN RISK. I am not in ANY way responsible if you get hurt.... ALSO, make SURE that you are not standing downwind of the water thrown , it could get caught in the wind and come back and burn you*******************

Here the kids are sitting in the window to watch. It was too cold for everyone to go outside

One of several cups of boiling hot water.

Finally Gabe came out with me to toss it so I could get better pictures. He doesn't have gloves but, he is holding boiling water and he was only out there for two seconds.

The water immediately turns to falling ice crystals and a foggy vapor.
Try the same experiment with cold water and it won’t work. Why? Livescience.com provides the answer.
Ultra-cold air, as we had Monday, can hold very little water vapor. Hot water, because it is near the boiling point, is very close to becoming vapor and has more surface area than cold water. When hot water hits the cold air, the cold air has little capacity to hold this water vapor. So the watery vapor clings to microscopic particles in the air and falls as crystals or snowflakes.

It as so cool that our neighbor who came over for a jump start ran home and told them to start boiling water!

It is great when weather gives a free science experiment .. now, the bitter cold can GO AWAY .... :)

Now for my Day 7 grateful photo challenge. I am really enjoying this challenge. It has kept me keeping my blog updated and, also always looking for reasons to be grateful.

Here is DAY 7 ... I am grateful for homeschooling!

and a side note ... I am grateful for new games got for Christmas and fun had together playing them.

We did this yesterday and Josef got some boiling water in the face :( But he is such a trooper he went and did another pot and just did it in smaller cups after that :) Another thing you could do with your kids is make some snow cream! I found the recipe on pinterest...It's 6 cups of WHITE snow lol..1 cup of milk and 1/2 cup of sugar..mix it together and wa la...snow cream! We put sprinkles on ours. Josef and Erika were skeptics..but in the end everyone gave it a thumbs up!

My kids love snow ice cream but we didn't have any Vanilla to make it this snowfall. We will DEF do it next snow fall! Anna is the only one that doesn't like it.

I didn't add any vanilla because I was out :)

I didn't think about doing it without. Next time I will just try it. YUM.
