Eggs Eggs, EVERYWHERE Eggs...

ok, so last fall my dh came home to tell me that we would be getting chickens from another family at church.. They had some and were moving and since my husband always wanted them.. what a perfect time??? Grit my teeth and smile was ALL I could do. I couldnt squash my husbands childhood dream of chickens but, I DID NOT WANT CHICKENS.
Besides chickens in the city.. how insane... wow, can you tell I am a city girl through and through?
"what will the neighbors think" "I will NOT clean up after those nasty things" bla bla bla these thoughts raced through my mind a million times as we waited for our chickens to arrive.
We finally went and picked them out. My two older ones picked a brown one *which they named Brownie and lays GREEN eggs* and a speckled one *which they named Speckles and she lays pinkish brown eggs* (and this mom gets REALLY confused because in my mind the brown chicken should lay the brownish eggs.. but whatever*
We got them home and all they did for us was make a mess... they werent used to our "coupe" and it was getting colder.. I threatened my kids all winter that if they didnt give us eggs come spring, we were going to be eating Speckles and Brownie for dinner!
Well sure enough first day of spring Brownie gave us a less then perfect mint green egg... it was slightly cracked so, my dh took it to the garden and cracked it open to see its contents.. yep, an egg alright...
After that day every few she would lay another but Speckles layed nothing. Finally tho, as if it was a fever, Speckles too started to lay... her first one looked like it got into a fight with Mike Tyson and lost.. so that too went to the garden.. but soon she was laying them regularly as well. We still get more green eggs then brown ones as Brownie seems to be laying them every other day now. But, I tell you, every egg is like the first egg for my children.. they are ever so proud of their chickens and just adore looking at them and seeing if an egg is there.
I am glad that I grit my teeth and didnt voice my opinion on getting the chickens. I get just as much enjoyment watching my children with them as they do having them~
We will soon be going to the local tractor supply and getting a third since my little one.. whom is almost three.. is well aware the he does NOT have a chicken whom lays eggs :P

I just loved having chickens when I was younger. I enjoyed gathering the eggs everyday.

Once you get the hang of taking care of them, you'll enjoy them.

Just think, no more having to buy eggs!!!!

Hi Kristy,
Just read your comment on my blog. Did you find the lyrics on my sidebar? I hope so. We have chickens too! I love to gather the eggs and watch them peck around in the yard.
